November is diabetes awareness month, and a good time for those who don’t have diabetes to see if they are at risk for diabetes. It’s also a good time for people with diabetes to assess how well they are managing their condition. To help area residents discover their health risks associated with diabetes, Trinity Hospital Twin City’s Diabetes Wellness Program will host a free hemoglobin A1C health screen from 3:30 pm to 7 pm on Wednesday, November 15th, at the hospital’s St. Francis Conference Center, 819 N. First Street.
A hemoglobin A1C screening is a blood test that measures blood sugar levels over three months. A1C screenings can reveal how well a person is managing his/her diabetes. People with diabetes who maintain a good A1C level can reduce their risks of getting serious health complications.
Hemoglobin A1C screenings can also reveal if a person is at risk for diabetes. Many factors can increase a person’s risk of diabetes including being overweight; having a mother, father, sister, or brother with diabetes; having had gestational diabetes; and more.
In addition to the A1C screenings, Dr. Rebecca Gambs, Optometrist, will offer free vision screenings, and educational information will be available. The Uhrichsville Lions Club will also have a collection box for used eyeglasses for any person who may want to donate old prescription glasses to charity.
No appointment is necessary to participate in the health screen, and fasting is not required. For more information, please call (740) 922-7450, ext. 2177. Hemoglobin A1C tests are recommended for all adults who have diabetes or are overweight and/or have other risk factors for diabetes. Participating in regular health screenings is one of the best ways to detect medical problems early.
